Donaghy Scandal Will Rock NBA’s Boat
Amidst all the signings and trades happening this off-season is a nightmare that the NBA front office would love to hate. Tim Donaghy was an NBA referee who allegedly bet on games including those he officiated making him able to influence the outcome of the games to favor him and his betting spreads.
I’m not here to talk about the details and all I can really say is that the FBI is looking into this matter especially since this scandal could possibly be connected to organized crime. Whether he had connections to organized crime or simply just was a gambling problem gone way overboard or if he even is guilty of anything at all, this is HUGE!
The reason why this scandal is bigger than the drug problems and the player brawls is that it involves breaking the sacred trust that the NBA and its players have on the referees. They have the power to make or break games with their judgment calls. This trust has been broken by one man who wielded that kind of power and who knows for sure whether or not it will again. To put things simply, the NBA will never be the same again. While the drug problems and brawls can be controlled, the Donaghy scandal has now put the doubt in people’s minds and it will be there possibly forever. Every time we see a questionable call by the refs in the future we WILL remember this. The NBA is scarred for life.
But don’t get me wrong. I’m sure the NBA and the FBI will get to the bottom of this and like always they will come out stronger. But for now, this is the NBA’s worst nightmare and I wouldn’t want to be David Stern right now.
