Kurt Thomas Trade Great For Sonics
Another pretty major trade was approved by the NBA front offices and this time it involved veteran big man Kurt Thomas.
The Seattle Supersonics acquired veteran forward Kurt Thomas and the Phoenix Suns’ first-round draft choices in 2008 and 2010 on Friday in exchange for a conditional second-round draft choice.
Seattle also sent Phoenix its $8 million trade exception to complete the deal. The Sonics gained the exception from Orlando earlier this month when they completed a sign-and-trade deal that sent Rashard Lewis to the Magic.
I may be proven wrong about my assessment in the future but by the looks of it I think it’s a disgusting trade by the Suns and a great one by the Sonics. Let me explain.
I understand that the Suns are trying to cut their salaries to save money but this doesn’t seem to be the right way to do it. First of all they already traded away James Jones. By losing Thomas and Jones they lose two guys who can contribute defensively. Thomas was the Suns answer to Tim Duncan in the playoffs and now he’s gone. The trade also sent away two future first rounders which is a bad developmental move especially after they sold or traded away past first rounders already. They say you can win now? I highly doubt it considering they couldn’t win then. What makes them think they can do that without Thomas? Suns GM Steve Kerr isn’t making a good first impression so far. Unless they use that exception to actually improve the team I believe the Suns won’t go as far as they did in the past.
As for the Sonics, I love what they did. They get a veteran presence to lead the young team even for the one year he currently has left. Also they get 2 future first round picks along with Thomas making that 5 first rounders over the next three years. This is the way to rebuild! Unlike Steve Kerr, GM Sam Presti seems to doing his job well and that’s giving him a good first impression.
